What is AUS-6 Stainless Steel: Is It Good for Knife Blades?

AUS-6 steel is a low-cost stainless steel developed by Aichi Steel Corporation of Japan. It is part of the AUS series including AUS 4, AUS 6, AUS 8, and AUS 10. Due to its good balance of performance and affordability, AUS-6 is often used to produce affordable knives for general-purpose and light-duty applications.

AUS-6 steel contains approximately 0.65% carbon content, along with other alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium in its composition. Its relatively low carbon content compared to other high-end steels makes it easier to sharpen, but also less hard and less able to hold a sharp edge for long periods.

  • Molybdenum (0.10%): It improves the steel’s strength and high-temperature performance. 
  • Nickel (0.60%): Nickel improves strength and toughness and increases hardenability.
  • Phosphorus (0.03%): Phosphorus increases strength and improves machinability.
  • Silicon (1.00%): Silicon increases strength and heat resistance.
  • Sulfur (0.03%): Sulfur improves machinability.

AUS 6 has a Rockwell hardness of 55-58HRC which is considered relatively moderate and is suitable for many general-purpose cutting applications. It contains carbon content, which provides strength and hardness s to the steel.

Wear Resistance:

AUS 6 Steel offers moderate wear resistance that is enough to withstand wear and tear from daily use and sharpening. The level of wear resistance offered by AUS 6 steel is relatively less compared to high-end steel. However, AUS-6 stainless steel provides good wear resistance with proper care and maintenance over time.

Edge Retention:

AUS 6 steel offers decent edge retention due to the carbon and molybdenum content in its composition. The knives made from this steel hold an edge longer than other mid-range steel. 

Toughness and durability:

Due to the Manganese and Nickel in its composition, AUS-6 stainless steel is tough enough and durable that it can withstand pressure and impact without breaking and chipping. 

Corrosion Resistance:

AUS-6 stainless steel contains enough chromium 14.50% in its composition, which enhances its corrosion resistance. So you can use it in wet and humid environments. However, it requires proper care and maintenance.

How good is AUS-6 stainless steel?

  • Lower edge retention: AUS-6 has lower edge retention than higher-end stainless steel. For this reason, it can’t hold a sharp edge for a long time compared to other steels. It requires more frequent sharping. 
  • Not suitable for heavy-duty applications: AUS-6 is not suitable for extreme or heavy-duty applications because it is not strong enough to withstand the stress and pressure of these types of tasks.
  • Susceptible to staining and pitting: AUS-6 stainless steel is susceptible to staining and pitting in certain conditions, especially if not properly cared for or exposed to harsh environments. This can lead to corrosion and damage to the blade.
  • Moderate toughness: AUS-6 may not have the same toughness compared to higher-end stainless steel. So it is more prone to chipping or breaking under high stress or impact.

AUS-6 stainless steel vs. 420HC: 

AUS-6 stainless steel and 420HC Steel are both popular mid-grade steel commonly used in the production of knife blades. AUS-6 contains around 0.65% in its composition, which is higher carbon content than 420HC. So AUS-6 has better hardness and wear resistance than 420HC. Additionally, it can take a slightly finer edge than 420HC but may not hold that edge as long. In terms of cost, AUS-6 is slightly cheaper than 420HC . 

However, if edge retention is your top priority, 420HC may be the better choice, while AUS-6 may be preferred for its slightly higher corrosion resistance.

AUS-6 is stainless steel which is commonly used for making low-budget knives due to its corrosion resistance and durability. However, like all knife blades, AUS-6 stainless steel requires proper care and maintenance to ensure that it performs at its best and lasts for a long time.
